COMPOSITE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS AND METHOD FOR THEIR MANUFACTURE

An elongate composite electrical conductor with at least one superconducting core region including processed core material surrounded by sheath material such as Cu. The processed core material has a peripheral portion of ex situ reacted MgB₂ and a central portion of in situ reacted MgB₂. The ex situ MgB₂ is interposed between the in situ reacted MgB₂ and the sheath material and reduces unwanted reactions. Also disclosed are methods of forming the composite electrical conductor, including hot isostatic pressing.
