PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information retrieval technique capable of achieving short response time to a retrieval request even if a database has increased in size. SOLUTION: A retrieval client device 101, which is communicably connected to a network system having a metadata retrieval device 102 and a plurality of image retrieval devices 103, includes a means (303) for sending retrieval criteria to the metadata retrieval device and directing searches on a database; a means (304) for grouping, according to the number of image retrieval devices, a plurality of image data resulting from retrieval by the metadata retrieval device, and assigning the image retrieval device to each group; and a direction means (305) for sending the retrieval criteria to the plurality of image retrieval devices, and directing each of the image retrieval devices to retrieve the image data of the assigned group among the plurality of image data obtained by the retrieval.
