PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an addition polymerization catalyst for obtaining an addition polymer in high polymerization activity and to provide a method for producing an addition polymer. SOLUTION: The addition polymerization catalyst is obtained by contacting a modified particle (A), a transition metal compound (B), an organoaluminum compound (C) and an electron donative compound (D). The coordination stabilization energy (Ea) of the organoaluminum compound (C) and the electron donative compound (D) by a predetermined quantum chemical calculation (B3LYP/3-21G level) is -120 kJ/mol<Ea<-80 kJ/mol.
