An apparatus for cleaning an ink jet head and a cleaning method using the same are provided to enable a collecting unit to collect a coating material discharged from an ink jet head and enable a filter to remove a foreign substance included into the collected coating material, thereby collecting and recycling the coating material wasted in a dummy jetting operation to minimize the manufacturing cost of an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device. A collecting unit(101) collects a coating material discharged from an ink jet head(106b) in the dummy jetting operation of the ink jet head. A filter(102) is connected to the collecting unit and filters the colleted coating material transferred from the collecting unit to remove a foreign substance. A cleaning unit(103) cleans the ink jet head to move the foreign substance and a remaining substance sticking to the ink jet head. The filter has a sieve structure.
