A method and an apparatus for generating a wide color gamut signal in an image acquisition device are provided to perform a gamma correction algorithm and an interpolation algorithm for a photographed image signal to generate an extended wide color gamut signal, thereby reducing the amount of data on an LUT(Look Up Table) for gamma correction and reducing interpolation calculation. An apparatus for generating a wide color gamut signal in an image acquisition device comprises a photographing unit(210), a gamma correction unit(220), an interpolation unit(230), a color gamut converter(240), a color gamut extension unit(250), a signal correction unit(260), and a correction gain generator(270). The gamma correction unit corrects the gamma of an image signal photographed by using gamma curve information determined according to an output format. The interpolation unit interpolates the gamma-corrected image signal into a linear image signal to be displayed on a display. The color gamut converter converts the interpolated image signal into a standard RGB(Red, Green, Blue) signal through a color converting matrix. The color gamut extension unit extends the standard RGB signal to a wide color gamut signal through a region converting matrix. The signal correction unit corrects the wide color gamut signal with a predetermined correction gain value. The correction gain generator compares the extended wide color gamut signal with an existing wide color gamut signal to generate the correction gain value.
