A variable volume dispenser contains a set of one or more fill tubes (10), each having a rod (60) or other volume-limiting member slidably mounted therein. Suction pressure can aspirate supported oligonucleotide beads or other powder (140), grnulate, or other particlute material into the fill tubes (10) for dispensing selected volumes into wells or other containers. The rods (60) or other members can be constructed to comprise a filter (260) having a poresize smaller than the particulate matter to be manipulated so th the material cannot be lodged inside the fill tube (10). In various embodiments, the volume of powder (140) or other material to be aspirated can be selectively set by moving the rods (60) to different locations within the fill tubes (10) using electromagnets (210). various embodiments, individual rods (60) can be independently activated.
