PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a melting furnace for treating waste asbestos constituted so as to make the whole of a system for treating the waste asbestos safe and simple, and a waste asbestos treatment method for simply treating the waste asbestos. SOLUTION: The melting furnace is equipped with a melting furnace main body 1 in which the waste asbestos (w) is supplied as a melting target material and of which the periphery is covered with an outer well member 13 and a heater 5 for heating the inside of the melting furnace main body and constituted so that the supply part 10 of the waste asbestos is provided to the upper part of the outer wall member, the heater is installed at the position just under the supply part and the waste asbestos supplied in the melting furnace main body is heated to 1,500°C or above by a jet flame. In the waste asbestos treatment method using the melting furnace, the waste asbestos is supplied in the melting furnace main body from the supply part in a state that the waste asbestos is housed in a feed container, the heater is operated and the waste asbestos supplied in the melting furnace main body is directly heated to 1,500°C or above by the jet flame from the heater.
