PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for a vehicle running capable of precluding a delay of the start of the avoiding operation when it is determined that there is a risk of contacting any obstacle, by giving a steering torque to a driver before a contact avoid supporting operation is conducted and thereby arousing his attention even in case the driver holds a steering wheel in a slack condition. SOLUTION: The safety device for the vehicle running to conduct the contact avoid supporting operation with any object detected (S16-S24 and S28) in case it is determined that there is a risk of contacting with such an object, is configured so that a steering torque to last for a prescribed period of time or lying at or under the prescribed value is given (S26) in the direction opposite to where the vehicle concerned makes avoidance from the object before the contact avoid supporting operation is conducted.
