PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein, in the prior art, deposits on a printer head can not be manually removed except when an ink ribbon is replaced. SOLUTION: A printer 1 stops rotation of a platen roller 32 or the like when a cleaning layer IJ of an ink ribbon IR is moved up to a heating surface 2a of a thermal head 2, and interrupts conveyance of a label sheet RS and the ink ribbon IR. The printer also rotates a ribbon supply roller 41 and a ribbon take-up roller 42 so that the ink ribbon IR is moved by the length of the cleaning layer IJ to the length direction of the ink ribbon IR, in an arrow direction YB, and then is moved by the same length in an opposite direction to the arrow direction. This cleaning operation is repeated by the predetermined number of times. The surface of cleaning layer IJ of the ink ribbon IR is thereby rubbed with the heating surface 2a of the thermal head 2, so that the dirt adhering to the heating surface 2a of the thermal head 2 is removed.
