PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hand-held device for personal use, which is used for the communication with an electronic label 11 of an electric shelf labeling (ESL) system. SOLUTION: The hand-held device includes a control means 55, memory means 61, transmission means 57 for transmitting a command to the electronic label, at least one button (53 and 53') for the input by a user, and a receiver 63 for receiving information from a central unit 1 of the system.
