Herbicidal and plant-growth-regulating compositions which comprise, as active ingredient, a novel cyclobutenedione ester of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which R denotes an alkyl radical having 2 to 12 C atoms which is optionally substituted by halogen, cycloalkyl, lower alkoxy or alkylthio, by carboxyl and its salt forms or by mono- or dialkylamino or trialkylammonio, a C3-C8-alkenyl or -alkynyl radical, a C3-C12-cycloalkyl radical, or the phenyl, benzyl or phenethyl radical, it being possible for the last-mentioned radicals to be optionally substituted in the benzene nucleus by at least one substituent from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino or nitro, are used for post-emergence weed control and for regulating the growth of plants, such as growth inhibition and desiccation of the leaves in crop plants.
