The constituent elements of tissues are detected and enumerated utilising exploration of histological preparation for study of sharing of densities of intercellular fibres by employing automatic optical instrument. A lamp (2) illuminates preparation on microscope slide (3) which is displaced in orthogonal directions by step motors (4, 5) in servo system (6). Image from microscope (1) is projected via prisms (9) and mirror (10) onto screen (7) to permit visual observation simultaneously with observation of CRT (8). Image is formed on a bar (11) comprising photodiodes associated with sequential exploration circuit (12) excited by clock (13) providing sync. with step motors. Further electronic processing enables signals to be memorised (20) for exploration (21).
