A valve (20) in a bypass channel (18) is triggered independently of a throttle valve. A control device (22) closes the throttle valve when an internal combustion engine (ICE) is idling and triggers the valve in the bypass channel so as to control the feed of air to the ICE so that the ICE is in a throttled operating state. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle's direct-injection diesel engine.
