A tape drive comprising two position-controlled motors 12,13, at least one of which is a closed-loop position-controlled motor, two tape spool supports 1,2 on which spools of tape 3,4 may be mounted, each spool 3,4 being drivable by a respective one of said motors 12,13, and a controller 14 for controlling the energisation of the motors 12,13 such that the tape may be transported in at least one direction between the spools 3,4. The controller 14 operates to monitor tension in a tape being transported between the spools 3,4 and to control the motors 12,13 to maintain the monitored tension between predetermined limits. |
