PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a large current from continuously running in a motor or the residual stress in a steering system from being abruptly relieved when the angular control is released by positively eliminating any distortion generated in the steering system after the steering wheel turn by steering while stopping or the like. SOLUTION: In the plan view of the steering system with a bottom side thereof directed forward of a vehicle, a turning wheel (a front wheel) turned to the left must be returned to a neutral position when the vehicle is driven straight backward. If using a stress relieving means, the steering angleϕis turned clockwise from the initial valueϕ=β1, and returned again to the originally desired neutral position (β2=0) after passing the neutral position (ϕ=0) by a predetermined angleβm (= exceeding angleα). The residual stress in the steering system such as a turning wheel 12 or the like can be effectively relieved by a stress relieving means to return the steering angleϕto the target valueϕ0 after exceeding the steering angleϕonce over the target steering angleϕ0.
