The present invention provides solution to the replacement of mercury in low-pressure discharge tubes for general illumination purposes. The use of gallium or aluminum halogenides, or a mixture thereof, provides, due to their spectral characteristics which arise from the theoretical study and experimental observation, a solution to the problem of the prohibition of the use of mercury, since they provide minimal Stokes losses, the necessary vapour pressure at temperatures corresponding to those of the mercury lamps, and are environmentally friendly materials. The lamp made of soft glass or quartz may operate and provide the useful emission spectra for general illumination under conditions of alternating, direct and pulse current, with or without electrodes, and with a low-pressure buffer gas consisting of one or more noble gases. |
