The device has a water reservoir (10) from which water flows across a communication duct (14) to water reservoir (18), where the quantity of the water permeates a foam or sponge (16) soaked in a water reservoir (18). The reservoir (18) is disposed under a transport horizontal plane of envelopes across a mail processing machine. The reservoir (10) is disposed in a receptacle (26) that is movable between bottom and top positions corresponding to the low and high level of water in the reservoir (10), respectively.
