Exhaust gas enters the silencer through a central pipe (2), flows through elongated silencing slots, and then into further oblique slots (7a & 7b) in a conical sleeve (8a & 8b). From here the flow continues through annular spaces, formed by concentric layers of pipes (9a to 9d), to the outer sleeve. Due to forward vehicle motion, atmospheric air enters the sleeve at its bulbous end, carrying the gas out and cooling the silencer. Excess hot gas opens the thermostatic valve, and discharges to atmosphere, via the holes in the end cone.
|
