Electromagnetic mixing of continuously cast metal - with magnetic field source coils near bottom of molten metal well

Improvements in the processes of electromagnetic mixing of continuously cast metallurgical prods. having an elongated right section, such as blooms are described in which the molten metal is treated, during solidification as it reaches the sec. cooling zone, by the action of a varying magnetic field which causes the liq. metal to move with horizontal translation in planes parallel to the major faces of the prod. Specifically the action of the magnetic field is localised near the level of the bottom of the solidification well. The growth of a central region of equiaxed structure is favoured, reducing piping between columnar crystals growing from mould walls.
