A burner tube (1 fig 1a) includes a tubular body 2 having an axially extending slot 3 and an inlet for combustible gas, such as an opening (6 fig 1a). The burner tube also has a metal mesh 4 which covers the slot, and in use, combustible gas entering the burner tube at the inlet passes through the slot and exits the burner tube through a flow area of the metal mesh. The mesh may be mounted on a porous plate 5, which may form a rigid support, and the axially extending slot may widen towards an end of the slot and define several heating zones. The flow area of the metal mesh is greater than the area of the slot at the outer surface of the tubular body, and in use, a visible flame may be anchored to the flow area of the metal mesh and the metal mesh may incandesce to produce radiant heat. The mesh may be a metal mesh of Fe-Cr-Al steel, and may be of knitted construction. |
