A thermal transfer printer has a tape drive comprising two motors 12,13, two tape spool supports on which spools of tape 3,4 may be mounted, each spool 3,4 being drivable by a respective one of said motors 12,13, a sensor 19 for sensing tape motion, and a controller 14 for controlling the energisation of the motors 12,13 such that the tape may be transported in at least one direction. The controller 14 receives a first signal indicating demanded tape motion, provides a first control signal to one of the motors 12,13, receives a second signal from the sensor 19 indicating actual tape motion, and then provides a second control signal based on the first control signal and the second signal. |
