A device for mounting rollers in a metal treating machine comprises a lower frame and an upper frame each of which carries a series of rollers. The rollers of at least one series are journalled in bearings carried by supports which are connected to the corresponding frames by an elastically yieldable arrangement which permits a certain amt. of vertical movement. Used in machine for effecting accelerated cooling of metal sheet. The roller mounting device enables deformed metal sheets or sheets of thicker gauge than the roll gap setting to pass through the machine without causing damage to the machine. The elastically yieldable material of the arrangement is pre-stressed so to function in both directions.
