Measurement of metallic gyroscope cylinders - using capacitive probes measuring distance of rotating piece part from circular reference

The metallic cylinders for use in gyroscopes and inertial assemblies are required to have precise dimensions. This is achieved by measurement using a capacitive probe assembly to measure the distance from a reference surface. A rotating platform (107) on a table (106) is rotated by a step motor (108). Flexible blades (111-114) support a table (109) which has translational movement and which carries a foot. A winding (117) on the foot operates in conjunction with a magnetic circuit (119) on a rotating table to form an electromagnetic motor. This moves the table parallel to its support (121). An arm (131) supports a capacitive probe (133) which operates w.r.t. the inner surface (134) of a reference ring (135). A sensor (137) on the arm hub (136) measures w.r.t. a piece (138) under measurement as the table rotates. The sensor signals are applied to electronic circuits for processing and display.
