A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to reduce energy and water consumptions by maintaining an optimum water temperature according to the kind of pollutant. A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the steps of setting an optimum temperature of water for each sort of pollutants of laundry, and maintaining the set temperature for a predetermined time by using at least one of water and steam. The washing machine includes a memory storing the optimum water temperature and a control unit maintaining the optimum water temperature. |
