THE LIGHT MODULATOR FOR FLAT PANEL DISPLAY

A light modulator for a flat panel display device is provided to reduce a manufacturing cost of the display device by removing composite optical films from an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device. A light modulator for a flat panel display device includes a solid optical multi-layer film arranged between transparent electrodes. The optical multi-layer film contains a material, whose refractive index is changed according to an electrical control. A mechanical displacement of the optical multi-layer film is changed according to the electrical control. Three to one thousand of layers are formed by alternatively using two materials with different refractive indexes. A high refractive layer has a multiple of a wavelength/2. A low refractive layer has the number of an odd multiple of a wavelength/4. A destructive interference is initially generated in the optical multi-layer film. The wavelength is a peak wavelength of the beam from a single-wavelength or multiple-wavelength light source.
