The machine has a command and control module (18) connected to a printing module(16) and an optical speed detector (20) to control printing of a postage imprint on a mail article e.g. envelope, based on speed. The detector has a light emitter (200) e.g. laser, for emitting light beam towards the article. A light receiver (202) e.g. complementary MOS type array sensor, receives the beam after the beam is reflected by the article and delivers an image of the reflected beam. An image processing module (206) determines displacement speed of the article by analyzing successive images of the beam.
