PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device for ensuring luminance to be easily viewed by a user according to video contents and suppressing power consumption. SOLUTION: The video display device (illustrated as a liquid crystal display 1) has an image-display control section 20. The image-display control section 20 acquires program information such as a "genre", a bit rate or the like by a program-information acquiring section 19, and controls a back-light control section 21 to control luminance of a back light 22 according to the acquired program information. It is preferable that the image-display control section 20 controls an image processing section 16 so as to change a conversion table 16a (selectively switched among many tables) according to the acquired program information as well as the luminance control.
