PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval system and an image retrieval method, for retrieving an image based on the real-time asset value of an image for a user. SOLUTION: A metadata analysis part 244 acquires metadata collected by a metadata collection part 240, and calculates an asset value parameter corresponding to each item of the metadata. A retrieval control part 30 acquires, upon receipt of a retrieval instruction of image data, an item name (Metadata 1, Metadata 2, to Metadata_n) from a metadata DB 242, receives setting for weighting each item of the metadata, transmits the weighting set for each metadata item to an asset value ranking processing part 26, and instructs the asset processing part 26 to rank the image data. The processing part 26 rank image data. A retrieval control part 30 reads image data from an image recording device 20, and displays the image data in the descending order of the asset value rank.
