An economically advantageous, safe washing agent for separation membrane that in the washing of separation membranes used in the filtration of public supply water, industrial water, stream water, lake water, groundwater, impo unded water, sewage water after secondary treatment, sewage water, wastewate r, etc., exhibits washing effects equivalent to or higher than those attaine d by conventional washing methods, and that does not contain hypochlorites t o thereby be free from harmful gas emission or other adverse effects on huma n body, and that avoids a rinse step involving washing with a large volume o f water to thereby shorten the washing time. The washing agent comprises hyd rogen peroxide, a heavy metal compound and a hydroxydicarboxylic acid. Prefe rably, the hydroxydicarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of malic acid, tartaric acid, tartronic acid, citramalic acid, dioxymaleic aci d and dioxymalonic acid, and the heavy metal compound is an iron ion.
