PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superior printer in which a printing character does not deform even when making a print in a printing medium with a thick paper. SOLUTION: A tension spring 22 is attached to the both ends of a carriage shaft 10 for slidably supporting a carriage 3 loaded with a printing head 4, and thereby the carriage shaft 10 is pulled up. A carriage shaft gear 19 is fixed in the both ends of the carriage shaft 10, and is engaged with a rack 21 formed in a side frame. The carriage shaft 10 can be moved only upward and downward. When the printing medium P which has a paper thickness more than a predetermined thickness is intaken, the carriage 3 moves upward equally in the left and right sides with the spinning of the carriage shaft gear 19 without inclining.
