A kayak having improved directional and wave (roll) stability comprising a hull having a lower hull along the bottom of the hull, and an upper hull formed above the lower hull. The upper hull has a width greater that a width of the lower hull to define a stepped cross-sectional profile generally along a length of the hull so that the upper hull provides an upper water contact surface greater than a lower water contact surface of the lower hull for increased roll stability. Preferably, a bow section included in the lower hull has a characteristic width profile which is wider than a characteristic width of the stern section generally along a length of the kayak hull so that the greater directional stability for the kayak is provided when the kayak is moving forward in the water. |
