A system and method for confirming identity and authority by a patient medical device (15-18) is provided. Master credentials (63) are issued to a requesting device (51) and a receiving device (52) from an authorizing agent (42). The master credentials (63) include the authorizing agent's (42) public key (65) and a digital signature (66) of a root certification authority (41). Device credentials (67) are issued to the requesting device (51) from the authorizing agent (42). The device credentials (67) include the requesting device's (51) public key (69) and the authorizing agent's (42) digital signature (70). Identification credentials (71) are provided to the receiving device (52) and include the device credentials (67) and the requesting device's (51) digital signature (72). The requesting device (51) is authenticated. The authorizing agent's (42) digital signature (70) in the device credentials (67) is checked using the authorizing agent's (42) public key (65) in the master credentials (63) of the receiving device (52). The requesting device's (51) digital signature (72) in the identification credentials (71) is checked using the requesting device's (51) public key (69) in the device credentials (67).
