PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a storage capacity for storing a lookup table for sub-field data conversion. SOLUTION: A compressed LUT 137 stored in an LUT code memory 131 is obtained by compressing a lookup table for converting an image signal into sub-field patterns composed of variable length portions all of which are ON, fixed length portions in which ON and OFF are mixed and variable length portions all of which are OFF. Since a sub-field pattern having such a format can be compressed at a high compression rate, the compression rate of the lookup table is also high and storage capacity for storing the lookup table can be reduced.
