PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming device which can process redetection at higher speeds. SOLUTION: The image forming device has a position sensor 38 detecting the position to which a carriage 20 moves in a main scanning direction, and an end detection sensor 40 mounted on the carriage 20 and detecting the end of recording paper P, and detects the positions of both ends of recording paper P from the position to which the carriage 20 moves by the position sensor 38 when both ends of the recording paper P is detected by the end detection section 40 (S110) by moving the carriage 20 at the start of printing. The image forming device decides on a detection starting position outside the width of the recording paper P in accordance with the detected end position (S150). When the width of the recording paper P computed from the detected positions of both ends is different from a previously set width, the device displays an error message (S140). During printing, the device redetects the end position of the recording paper P from the detection starting position (S200) by moving the carriage 20 to the detection starting position.
