ROLLER FOR THE TREATMENT OF WEBS, PREFERABLY PAPER WEBS

A roller for a paper smoother or calender is provided with a rotary tubular casing (20) and a fixed core (30) traversing the casing of the roller. The space (31) separating the casing from the core is divided into multiple annular chambers (31a, 31b,...) by means of a plurality of peripheral seals (32). A liquid flow may pass through each of those annular chambers. The temperature of each liquid flow may be individually adjusted. Thereby, it is possible to temper the casing (20) progressively and differently in order to act progressively on its outer diameter. The core (30) is supported only at its ends. The peripheral seals (32) are displaceable with respect to the core (30) perpendicularly to the roller axis and have the shape of endless metal rings of which the outer diameter is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the casing (20).
