PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily making a cyclic olefin polymer film having a small content of a remaining solvent and a small heat shrinkage after annealing even when the polymer has a large molecular weight and a high glass transition temperature, and to provide the cyclic olefin polymer film obtained by the method. SOLUTION: The cyclic olefin polymer film has <100 ppm content of the remaining solvent, and≤500 ppm heat shrinkage after the annealing. The method for making the cyclic olefin polymer film includes casting a solution containing a cyclic olefin polymer and an ester of an aliphatic or alicyclic polybasic carboxylic acid derived from the aliphatic or alicyclic polybasic carboxylic acid, and an alcohol or the like having at least one secondary or tertiary carbon atom in the carbon main chain, regulated so that the number of carbons contained in one branching group bonded to the secondary or tertiary carbon atom may be≤1 on a base material, and drying the cast product.
