PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter medium for air filters, which lowers extremely a gas yield of an organic material produced from the filter medium without complicating processes nor lowering a trapping efficiency of the filter medium, and additionally, suppresses also a generation of formaldehyde which is one of causes of a sick house syndrome, and the air filter using the filter medium. SOLUTION: The filter medium for the air filters keeps a constitution that a filter medium layer comprising a melt-blown nonwoven fabric bonded with a reinforcing layer comprising a thermally-bonded nonwoven fabric consisting of a thermal adhesion fabric, and is characterized in that a formaldehyde diffusing rate (μg/m<SP>2</SP>h) is less than 5.0.
