Onco-tools are compositions for detecting and treating tumors containing hypoxic/acidic areas characteristic of malignant tumors larger than microsco pic size. Onco-tools have the properties of being repelled from cells in nor mal tissues, being sequestered in cells in acidic areas of tumors, and any o nco-tools not sequestered in tumors are cleared from the body by the kidneys . Prior to use a selected radioisotope is attached to the onco-tool, which t hen serves to report the presence of tumors (diagnostic use) or serves to de stroy tumors (therapeutic use). Onco-tools are designed to provide an unprec edented level of specificity for tumors by virtue of their unique multi-acid structures, engineered pKa values, and adjusted pH- dependent lipophiliciti es. Together these novel properties are designed to provide a many-fold incr ease in selectivity for tumors compared to selectivities afforded by convent ional cancer diagnostics and therapies.
