PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel excavator which is effective and proper in excavating a tunnel with a rectangular section. SOLUTION: A plurality of rows of main cutters 3 parallel with each other are arranged vertically on the front part of an excavator body 2, each main cutter 3 having an approximately horizontal rotating shaft perpendicular to an excavation direction. At least the uppermost row of main cutter 3 is made into a stirring cutter 3A fitted with a plurality of stirring blades 17 arranged axially at intervals in such a way that each stirring blade 17 is composed of a pair of helical blades 18 helical in reverse to each other, while the lower rows of main cutters 3 are made into screw cutters. Behind the stirring cutter 3A, a lateral transfer unit, such as a paddle screw 20, that transfers excavated earth and sand widthwise, and a main transfer unit, such as a screw conveyor 14, which transfers earth and sand backward are disposed. Some of the cutters are set to be capable of moving forward and backward. A rotating cutter serving as a subcutter 4 is disposed in front of the rows of main cutters 3.
