PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device which can be prolonged in lifetime by the improvement of an organic layer. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent device includes the organic layer 6, which consists of a hole transport layer 4, an organic light-emitting layer 3, and an electron transport layer 5 which are stacked in this order, between two electrodes 1 and 2 arranged to face in opposite directions. At least in one portion, from among portions of the hole transport layer 4 which is in contact with the organic light emitting layer 3, a portion inside the organic light emitting layer 3, and a portion of the electron transport layer 5 which is in contact with the organic light-emitting layer 3, a mixed layer 7 is formed which is composed of an organic component, which constitutes the organic layer 6, mixed with not lower than 0.1 mass% nor higher than 20 mass% of an insulator. By forming the mixed layer 7 which is composed of the organic component constitutes the organic layer 6 and mixed with an insulator, the carrier transport characteristic of the organic layer 6 can be adjusted; and at the same time, the film quality of the organic layer 6 can be stabilized.
