PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the mold clamping device of an injection molding machine which can miniaturize a mold clamping cylinder by shortening a necessary stroke of the mold clamping cylinder and can reduce a necessary amount of a hydraulic fluid. SOLUTION: In the mold clamping device 10 having the mold clamping cylinder 16, a fixed platen 18, and a movable platen 20, the movable platen 20 is separated from the mold clamping cylinder 16, and a forward/backward moving cylinder 26 is installed which moves the movable platen 20 back and forth in a large stroke. A connection shaft 64 having an uneven peripheral surface is fixed to the movable platen 20. A chucking device 72 having a chuck 76 with an uneven inner surface and a driving cylinder 86 which opens, closes, and drives it is fitted to the mold clamping cylinder 16 to move integrally with the piston 60 of the mold clamping cylinder 16. The mold clamping cylinder 16 and the movable platen 20 are connected with each other by the closing action of the chuck 76, and the connection is released by the opening action of the chuck 76.
