<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having excellent charge-transfer ability for use in an organic semiconductor. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to a compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>indicate each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-18C alkyl group or the like). A luminous layer formed by a composition containing a conjugated polymer and the compound represented by formula (1) gives an organic electroluminescent device having higher current density than that given by a luminous layer formed by a composition not containing the compound represented by formula (1) or a luminous layer containing CBP. Its driving voltage is lowered. The luminous layer is recognized to be excellent in charge-transfer ability and charge-injection ability and can be driven at a low voltage.
