<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of suppressing the deterioration of display image quality due to moire caused between first and second optical modulation elements, and capable of securing reliability of the device. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device includes: a light source 2; the first optical modulation element (luminance modulation light valve 34); the second optical modulation element (color modulation light valve 32); and a relay optical system to transmit the optical image of the first optical modulation element to the second optical modulation element. The relay optical system includes a transmission type image forming element (micromirror array 25) for forming the image of the optical image by the first optical modulation element on the side opposite to the incident side. The relay optical system is provided with retroreflective elements (corner cube arrays 45 and 46) for reflecting at least either one of first light emitted from the light source and reflected on the first surface of the transmission type image forming element and second light emitted from the light source and not reflected on the reflection surface of the transmission type image forming element but transmitted through through-holes toward the transmission type image forming element. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
