PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cyclic olefin-diene copolymer excellent in heat resistance, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a copolymer comprising units represented by formula (1) and cyclic olefin units, and to a method for producing the copolymer. In the formula, X1to X4are each independently the group 16 atom of the periodic table; R1and R2are each independently H or a 1 to 20C hydrocarbon; and A1to A10are each independently H, a halogen atom, an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, a substituted silyl, an alkoxy, an aralkyloxy, an aryloxy, a disubstituted amino, or a hydrocarbonthio.
