Methods and systems for allocating network resources between network applications in a data network, each network application having associated therewith one or more application flows, each application flow being an exchange of data packets; the method comprising: determining, in respect of each network application, an application-level importance measure; monitoring characteristics of transmitted data packets containing data of relevance to the network applications; determining application-level service-quality measures in respect of the network applications, the application-level service-quality measures being dependent on monitored characteristics; and allocating available network resources between the network applications in dependence on the application-level importance measures and application-level service-quality measures. |
