The appliance has a water supply unit (18) for supplying water to a steam generating unit (14). A sensor unit (40) is provided for detecting air infiltration in the water supply unit. The sensor unit has a sensor (42) for monitoring a water level (P). The water supply unit is provided for self-regulation of water supply to the steam generating unit. The water supply unit has a water tank (22) to provide water in a sealed condition. The sensor detects air infiltration in the water tank. An independent claim is also included for a method for steam cooking of food using steam generation.
