PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the focusing time by efficiently detecting a focal position. SOLUTION: In a photographing device, when a release button is half depressed, the lens position of a focus lens 15a at this time point is checked. When the lens position of the focus lens 15a is closer to a near distance side than an intermediate lens position which is the intermediate location between the infinity lens position and the nearest lens position, the focus lens 15a is moved toward a far distance lens end from a near distance side lens end, to detect the focal position and when the lens position of the focus lens 15a is closer to a far distance side than the intermediate lens position, the focus lens 15a is moved toward a near distance lens end from a far distance side lens end, to detect the focal position.
