PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supporting body which is nearly free from thickness unevenness of a magnetic layer and has excellent adhesiveness between a metal vapor deposition layer and the magnetic layer and by which a high density magnetic recording medium nearly free from an error rate can be obtained when especially the magnetic recording medium is formed. SOLUTION: In the supporting body wherein a layer (layer Ma) containing a metal or metal based inorganic compound is provided on one surface A of a polyester film and a layer (layer Mb) containing a metal or metal based inorganic compound is provided on the other surface B, a protrusion ratio (Y/X) of at least one surface is 20% or below when the number of fine protrusions having 1 to 10 nm height and the number of fine protrusions having 5 to 10 nm height are defined as X and Y, respectively.
