The present invention relates to the building of staircases for dwellings or the like, of the so-called "spiral" type. It is particularly noteworthy in that its central newel consists of an assembly of newel elements of right-parallelipipedal shape with a square cross-section, the offsetting of these newel elements representing the aesthetic advantage of the invention. The assembly is carried out by dry fitting of three timber components : the newel element, the step and the prop. The assembly is made, but not exclusively, of glued-laminated timber. <IMAGE>
