Polymerizable compounds represented by the general formula (1) which are excellent in solubility in solvent and in alignment control function and optical quality: (1) wherein M¹ and M² are each independently hydrogen or methyl; X¹ and X² are each independently a direct bond, optionally branched alkylene of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, alkyleneoxy, or alkyleleoxy- carbonyloxy; X³ is optionally branched alkylene of 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Y¹ and Y² are each ester linkage or the like; and A, B, C and D are each a ring structure such as 2,6-naphthylene.
